What is communication?

Before going to the effective ways of communication, let’s talk about communication. Well, communication is an act of giving, receiving, and sharing information. If we talk in simple words, then talking or writing, and listening or reading. Good communicators listen carefully, speak or write carefully, and respect different opinions.

Effective means producing or capable of producing a result. So effective communication can be defined as a process of exchanging ideas, thoughts, knowledge, and information such that the purpose or intention is fulfilled in the best possible manner.

If we explain it more carefully, it means that just delivering a message is not enough. It must meet the purpose of the sender. So getting a clear message and intention of communication be told through effective communication.


Effective ways of communication

Transmitting a message effectively is an art. This needs continuous practice, experience, and some ways to implement. So following are some ways through which a person can convey information to another effectively and efficiently.


1. Take time before you speak


One person must be prepared to think before speaking. The statement one is going to share has some meaning, stand, and reason behind it. So it becomes one's responsibility to take a proper stand and then share with the world. You need to figure out ways to convey or deliver your idea and its importance.

2. Be slow to speak and quick to listen


It doesn’t mean that one needs to speak in slow motion. ‘Slow to speak' means controlling your words, statements, and don’t blurt out everything that comes into your head. ‘Quick to listen means that we train ourselves to wait for the whole story before diving in with our opinion.


3. Recognize the 3 ‘V’ of spoken communication


When we meet people in general or face to face, keep in mind that we have all three V's to communicate.

a) Visual (how we look)

b) Vocal (how we sound)

c) Verbal (what we say)

Make sure that each of these V's is aligned to avoid any miscommunication and convey a powerful and professional message.


4. Use the right words at the right time


There is a proverb that relates; “A word spoken at the right time is like gold apples on a silver tray.” Language is not only a means of expression and communication. It is an instrument of experiencing, thinking, and feeling. So the power of the right words is at the right time.
